The holidays are stressful enough without having to worry about a potentially poisoned pet. Below, our top 10 list of holiday-related decorations, plants and food items that the veterinarians at Pet Poison Helpline, an animal poison control center based out of Minneapolis, MN, recommend keeping away from your patients.

  1. Tinsel and holiday ornaments
  2. Liquid potpourri
  3. Poinsettias (don’t believe the hype)
  4. Holly, mistletoe, lilies, and Japanese yew
  5. Alcohol
  6. Unbaked bread dough
  7. Grapes, raisins and currants (e.g., fruitcake!)
  8. Xylitol
  9. Fatty table scraps
  10. Chocolate
